This series of intimate, invented floral paintings was inspired after a day of looking at the paintings of Chaim Soutine, in particular, his lush and dynamic use of red. The color lingered with me and I began the first painting thinking about his red and what followed was a series of fifty floral/bouquet "portraits." In these works I am interested in exploring the visceral qualities of paint and creating images that assume a distinct personality and emotional presence.
